This ignition coil is the "TEC" style. The models above all use the TEC style ignition coil. A frequently asked question from Honda owners is "what is the difference between the TEC and Hitachi ignition coil"? The difference is small, but they are physically a different size. The only US market Civic that had a Hitachi distributor and coil was the HX Civic. The coils themselves are not interchangeable.
An ignition coil (also referred to as coil pack, coil on plug/COP, coil over plug) is a crucial part of your ignition system. Ignition coil is a miniature power transformer, which converts the 12v in your vehicle electrical system into tens of thousands of volts. This will send the voltage to the spark plug, and ignite the fuel. Ignition coils wear out over time. Over the years, high and low temperatures, humidity, and even bad grounds and electrical problems can cause igntion coils to fail, or not perform at full capacity. This can cause a misfire, also referred to as hiccups or surging. Other causes for ignition coil failrure are washing the engine bay. and rain. TheTEC style ignition coil is inside of the distributor, just behind the distributor rotor in these particular Honda and Acura cars.
