The 2.0L engine code is K20. The 2.4L Engine code is K24, and the S2000 2.2L engine code is F22C1. These ignition coils are a very commonly replaced item. An ignition coil (also referred to as coil pack, coil on plug/COP, coil over plug) is an important part of your ignition system. Ignition coils are mini power transformers, which convert the 12v in the electrical system of your Honda or Acura into tens of thousands of volts. This will send the voltage to the spark plug, and ignite the fuel. Ignition coils wear out over time. Over the years, high and low temperatures, humidity, and even bad grounds and electrical problems can cause ignition coils to fail, or not perform at full capacity. This can cause a misfire, also referred to as hiccups or surging. Because the ignition coils wear in the same environment, it is usually best to replace old ignition coils all at the same time, and save money or time on labor. Other causes are washing the engine bay and rain. The ignition coils in these K20 (2.0L) and K24 (2.4L) Hondas are a commonly replaced part.
The ignition coils in these Hondas are easy to change. When diagnosing misfires on these, you just plug in an OBDII scanner into the OBDII port (under the dashboard by driver's right leg), you will see codes. P0301 is cylinder 1 for example. That is the closest cylinder to the timing belt, or the driver's side of your Honda or Acura. If it is giving a P0300 (random misfire), don't worry! Hondas tend to throw random misfire codes instead of pinpointing the actual misfire. The easy way to pinpoint this is to swap one coil out at a time until the issue goes away. Swapping coils in these vehicles is a very easy procedure. Just make sure that you don't run the engine while the coil is not connected to the spark plug, as that can cause damage to the coil and other various electrical system components.
Checking vehicle grounds, wiring, and other components such as the vehicle computer (also referred to as the PCM, ECU, or ECM) can also prevent repeated failure of ignition coils and save hundreds, or even thousands of dollars in repairs.
