Common Reasons why a 2006 Grand Marquis Misfires
By far, the most common reason why your Mercury Grand Marquis will misfire is due to a bad ignition coil. Keep in mind that while a bad coil pack is common, it isn't the only reason why you can experience a misfire in your 2006 Grand Marquis. There are other reasons such as fuel injectors, cam & crank sensors, MAF issues, bad spark plugs, and wiring/connection issues. One way to narrow your diagnostic down is by swapping a presumed bad ignition coils over to another cylinder and seeing if the DTC code follows the ignition coil. For example, if you have a code P0303, meaning you have a misfire on cylinder number 3 in your 2006 Grand Marquis, you can more that ignition coil to cylinder number 2. Start your engine, give it enough time to identify the new misfire location, and rescan the PCM computer for codes. If you get a P0302, you now know for sure that you have a bad ignition coil. This is a simple and free method to find the issue. If you do not own an OBDII scanner, you can find these for under $20 at many online retailers. If you are not sure where to find them, we will be happy to refer you to a good vendor who offers them (if we don't stock them ourselves by the time you read this!). Owning an OBDII scanner will save you thousands of dollars and headaches when it comes time to repair your 2006 Grand Marquis.
