2004 Crown Victoria, and Crown Vic CVPI & P71 Police Interceptor Ignition Coil Packs

 

Many people ask if the ignition coils are the same between the regular 2004 Crown Victoria and the Police interceptors (CVPI and P71). The answer is yes. All Crown Victorias share the same exact 4.6L 2 valve V8 engine with no internal differences. There are definitely many external differences. The actual engine itself for the police interceptors has a bigger intake for the 2004 model year, and the PCM for all years is tuned much more aggressively than the civilian model. If the ignition coils in your Crown Victoria fail and they are all over 7 years old it's generally recommended to change all of the coils at the same time. While you can get away with replacing just one if the other coils are not very old, this isn't normally the case. Many owners are not sure of the age of the coil packs in the Crown Vic, or the coils are original and over 10-15 years old. The biggest issue with replacing the ignition coils is not the difficulty of replacing them, but just the cost of these coil packs themselves. If you call the dealer or any auto parts store, you will be in for a sticker shock. These ignition coils can run from $50 all the way up to $100 for each one! This warranty is good for as long as you own your 2004 Crown Victoria and covers any bad ignition coil, and it also covers all shipping back and fourth. If you feel like you need to take your Crown Vic to the auto shop. stop right now! This job may seem difficult, the but the coil packs can be changed by anyone with basic automotive experience. All you need is a 7 mm socket, an 8 inch or longer extension, and preferably a swivel socket (to make things easier). Many people thing you need to remove the fuel rail, because it sits right over the ignition coils, but you can simply unbolt the 7mm bolt from the coil packs and swing them around the fuel rail without an issue. If you are changing the spark plugs at the same time (most people do this) we recommend to tighten them to 20 ft/lbs of torque instead of the recommended  11 ft/lbs from Ford. The recommended torque was not enough, and allowed the spark plugs to back out a little bit until there were just a couple of threads hanging on. Then they would blow out of the cylinder, making a noise so nasty, you would think your engine sucked up a cow.
