2001 Ford Crown Victoria Ignition Coils

 

The 2001 Ford Crown Victoria (including CVPI and P71 Police interceptors) comes with the 4.6L V8. This engine uses 8 individual coil on plugs which as they age, need to be replaced in packs of 8. Yes, you can get away with replacing one coil, but single ignition coils are going to cost more per coil pack, and you will be spending time re-diagnosing the problem when another one goes out. It's easier and cheaper to replace all 8 at the same time. The 4.6L V8 uses the DG508 ignition coils. These ignition coils have a curved rubber boot as opposed to other ignition coil packs with a straight rubber boot used in different Ford vehicles. If you are looking to save money on replacing the ignition coils in your 2001 Ford Crown Victoria, you've come to the right place. These ignition coils from the parts store or dealer can run up to $80 or even $100 each. This can be $800 or more which is simply just insane. Diagnosing a Misfire in Your 2001 Ford Crown Victoria (and CVPI, P71)

 

The 4.6L V8 found in your Crown Victoria is run by what we like to call a "lenient" PCM. Why doe we call it lenient? Well, if you get a misfire on most vehicles, you will get a check engine light, allowing you to simply plug a cheap OBDII scanner (under $10 online) to get a code. This way you can find out which cylinder is misfiring and figure out if it is the ignition coil or another problem - easy. The PCM in the 2001 Ford Crown Victoria does not always turn on the check engine light, even if the engine is misfiring. This cna cause a bunch of headaches for owners, and make them give up and take it to the dealership - who will charge a TON of money to find the issue. There is another way to pull up these misfires in your 2001 Crown Victoria. Get ahold of an OBDII scanner with Mode 6 and check out our article on how to identify these misfires. Basically the PCM will record and store every misfire it sees, but if it doesn't misfire more than 2.3% of the firing cycle, then it will not turn on the check engine light. Turns out, under 2.3% is still enough to feel the misfires. While we can see that Ford was trying to make it easier to pass smog (no check engine light = pass in some states) it doesn't change a thing for vehicles in states like California that get hooked up to the emissions machines.  

 

Spark plug torque required 11 ft lbs. Many shops recommend torqueing to 20 ft/lbs to prevent the spark plug blowout issues.
