1999 Ford Crown Victoria Ignition Coils

1999 Ford Crown Victoria Ignition Coils

The 1999 Ford Crown Victoria uses a distributor-less ignition system. Instead of a distributor and spark plugs wires, this car has individual ignition coil on plugs. This means that there is one ignition coil that sits right on top of each spark plug. The ignition coils plug into the engine wire harness. These coils can fail over the years, and should be replaced in sets. You can get away with replacing just one ignition coil if the rest of the coils are not too old, but if the rest are around the 7 year mark or older, it's best to change them all at the same time. Our Araparts ignition coils offered for the Crown Victoria are quality lifetime warranty coil packs at a low cost compared to the $50+ coils at the local stores and auto dealers. The 1999 Crown Victoria Firing order (Cylinder numbers) are from left to right, front to back. The 1999 Crown Victoria comes with only 1 engine - the 4.6L V8. This included the P71, CVPI police interceptors. They also use the same 4.6L V8. The ignition coil used in this Crown Vic is the DG508 coil pack. This is the most commonly used ignition coil in the 2 valve V8 Ford engines from this era. The rubber boot is curved as well unlike some other Ford ignition coils.

1999 Ford Crown Victoria Misfires - Multiple Types

There are different kinds of misfires. One is an occasional misfire, the other is a constant misfire. The constant misfire is by far the easiest to pinpoint. I you own an OBDII scanner, you can plug it into the OBD port underneath the driver's side dash and get the codes that are causing the misfire. Once you find the misfire in your 99' Crown Vic, you can swap the coil to determine if it is indeed the coil pack causing the problem. We recommend resetting the PCM after swapping the coil pack, then driving the car until the check engine light comes back on. This allows the computer some time to read the new misfire location. If the misfire code doesn't change, then you most likely have a different issue. If you can feel the misfire, but there is no check engine light then you will want to use an OBDII scanner with Mode 6. This is the same exact process for the 1999 Crown Vic, the CVPI, and P71 as well. With Mode 6, you can see all of the misfires that the engine recorded without a check engine light needing to be on. This is an incredibly useful tool, and it starts around $50 online at some vendors. The Crown Victorias along with other Fords in this generation were known to not turn on the check engine light, even if the misfire can be obvious, which is frustrating.
