1998 Ford Crown Victoria Ignition Coils

1998 Ford Crown Victoria Coil Packs

The 1998 Crown Victoria came with a 4.6L V8 that uses 8 individual DG508 ignition coils. This was the first year that Ford introduced this type of ignition system setup in the Crown Victoria. This setup allows the computer in your Crown Vic more control over the spark which allows for better performance, gas mileage, and emissions. The only down side is the cost. This can be pricey because the local auto parts stores charge $50 and up just for one of these ignition coils. Replacing all of the coils at once is a lot more than most of us would like to spend on this type of repair. At Araparts, we have full sets of ignition coils for your Crown Victoria at a price that is just near the price of 1 coil from the dealer or store. We buy large quantities of coils to get the same quality parts at a much lower price. The local stores may only carry 8 on hand at once while we buy thousands at a time to get the lowest prices on the highest quality parts.

1998 Ford Crown Victoria Misfiring Symptoms

If you are feeling your 98' Crown Vic hesitate while accelerating, putting, or skipping, then you have a misfire. Your duty is now to find out where the misfire is coming from. What you will need here is an OBDII scanner. These run under $10 on many online stores. If this seems too expensive, imaging spending $100 just to have a mechanic look at your car. They are just going to use their OBDII scanner to find the misfiring cylinder. If you can feel a misfire, but there is no check engine light, you can diagnose this in your 1998 Crown Victoria by using an OBDII scanner with Mode 6. In Mode 6, you can see all of the misfires that the PCM records, even if there is no check engine light. Mode 6 scanners start at $50, and are still a much better deal than taking it to a mechanic. This way you can identify the misfire, and find out if it is the ignition coil, or another problem.

1998 Ford Crown Victoria Ignition Coil Replacement

The ignition coils in your 1998 Crown Victoria can be removed without removing the fuel rail. After unbolting the coil packs, you can simply bend it around the fuel rail and remove it. Remember the boots are rubber, so they will flex enough to go around the fuel rail with no issue. We also include dielectric grease with the coils. For the 1998 Crown Victoria, we include a 2.5g packet of dielectric grease, which is enough to lubricate the boots. We apply dielectric grease on the inside of the rubber boots to protect them against moisture, and make future removal easy as well. While you can also add dielectric grease to the primary lead on these coils, we generally recommend not to apply it at all since many owners tend to stuff these full. Dielectric grease is still grease and can suppress a spark of too much is used. It really isn't neccessary to use on the primary 12v connector as the harness connectors have gaskets inside of them.
