For the 2006 3 series and 5 series models, these coils only fit models manufactured after 4/2006. Any date before 4/2006, these will not fit. They look exactly the same as the coils for the models manufactured before 4/2006, but there is a notch on the connector that is in a different position, and will not allow the connector to plug in. You can find the manufacture date on the door jamb.
Other information relating to these coils:
Some BMWs of these years come from the factory with Delphi coils, and others come with Bosch coils. The Delphi coils look slightly different than the coils pictured in this listing. They have a silver outside casing instead of a black casing. Both type of coils fit and will perform the same. You can use either ignition coil in your BMW, but it is recommended to use all of one type, and not mix and match. The Araparts aftermarket coils in this listing replace the Bosch type, not the Delphi.
General replacement information:
The ignition coils in your Bimmer (also referred to as coil packs, coil on plug/COPs, coil over plugs) are an important part of your ignition system. The ignition coils are miniature power transformers, which convert the 12v in your vehicle electrical system into tens of thousands of volts. This will send the voltage to the spark plug, and ignite the fuel. Ignition coils wear out over time. Over the years, high and low temperatures, humidity, and even bad grounds and electrical problems can cause ignition coils to fail, or not perform at full capacity. This can cause a misfire, also referred to as hiccups or surging. Because the ignition coils wear in the same environment, it is usually best to replace old ignition coils all at the same time, and save money or time on labor.
Other causes are washing the engine bay and rain. The Ignition coils in the BMW vehicles of this age are frequently replaced as they age.
Checking vehicle grounds, wiring, and other components such as the vehicle computer (also referred to as the PCM, ECU, or ECM) for damage can prevent repeated failure of ignition coils and save hundreds, or even thousands of dollars in repairs.
