In 1996, Toyota introduced the new 4 Runner. The 3.4L V6 verion had a waste spark style ignition coil setup consisting of 3 ignition coil over plugs, and 3 spark plug wires. This setup for the 4 Runner was more cost efficient, yet reliable. It allowed better control over ignition timing, allowing for better fuel economy, power and efficiency. If 1 of the three ignition coils were to go bad, and they are several years old, it is best to replace all three ignition coils at once.
