2003 Saab 9-3 Ignition Coils

 

Make sure to pay attention to the fitment details. There are a few different fitment options. There is a 2.0 and a 2.3 engine. They use completely different styles of ignition coils. When selecting the ignition coils for your Saab, make sure to note if it is the SE convertible model, or the non convertible. The convertible and sedan use two different types of ignition coils. Common check engine light codes for a misfire in these cars is P0300 (random) P0301, P0302, P0303, and P0304.  These OBDII codes will help you to identify if you have a bad ignition coil (or cassette for the 2.3) or another issue. Other common codes you may see with a bad ignition coil in your 2003 Saab 9-3 are P0351, P0352, P0353, and P0354. These are codes for a break in the circuit, but in the Saab, a bad ICM (ignition coil module) can trigger these codes, causing confusion when diagnosing. The ICM is built into the ignition coils thus making the solution as simple as replacing the ignition coils.

Changing all 4 coils at the same time. Necessary in my Saab?

Well, if you have the 2.3, then you have no choice. The Cassette style coil is a one piece unit that delivers spark to all cylinders. When it fails, the entire unit must be replaced. If you own the 2.0 Saab 9-3, then you can get away with replacing one coil. The caveat here is that if the coils are old (usually 7 years or older) then it's best to replace them all anyways as they tend to all fail within a short period of time. If the coils have been replaced somewhat recently, you can get away with replacing just one. There are so many benefits to changing all of the coils. Common symptoms of a misfire in my Saab

Common symptoms are usually described as a chugging, hiccuping, or surging feeling. You will feel the engine misfire, and this is usually accompanied by a check engine light. When this happens, it's best to start looking for a replacement as soon as possible to prevent damage to your catalytic converter. While it's true many owners have driven thousands of miles on a misfiring engine with no damage, it's best to not chance it. Older converters will fail sooner, and newer ones will have the life shortened. Driving for just a few days with a misfire will not hurt, Even up to a week may be just fine, but we still recommend to get this resolved as soon as possible. Many owners forget to deal with this, and drive months, and even years (in a few cases) on a misfire.
