Diagnosing a Bad Ignition Coil On Your 2006 Nissan Maxima 3.5L V6

 

If you feel your engine running rough, and your check engine light is on, don't take it to the shop just yet. Anybody with basic mechanical skills can locate a bad ignition coil and replace the ignition coils without much trouble. Removing the intake manifold may seem like a very difficult and lengthy job, but remember that it is designed to be removed easily for service. First get yourself an OBDII scanner for under $20 at many online retailers. This is a must for anybody who owns a vehicle. Even if you don't work on cars, you can arm yourself with knowledge before walking into a mechanic shop, and even the mechanics will appreciate you giving them this information. This makes their job much easier. For those that do work on their vehicles, go ahead and scan the check engine light for codes. A P0301 through P0306 indicated a misfire detected. Locate the cylinder that's misfiring, and swap that coil over to another cylinder. Reset the ECU/ECM and drive your Maxima until the check engine light comes back on. Doing this prevents a false reading. If the misfire code follows the ignition coil, then you know for sure that the ignition coil is bad.

 

2006 Nissan Maxima Melted/Burnt Ignition Coils

 

If the ignition coils in your 2006 Maxima appear melted, scorched, blistered or burn, check and repair the main ground cable AND the ECU/ECM before replacing the ignition coils. It is a well known issue with these Maximas that the main ground cable that connects to the negative terminal on the battery can break. As soon as this happens, the ECU/ECM and ignition coils can all get damaged in the process.
