2003

The 2003 Maxima uses 6 individual ignition coils. There is one important detail that you must know before changing the ignition coils in your 3.5L V6 2003 Maxima, and that is the main ground cable. This is known to break, causing a number of issues with the ECU, and the ignition coils melting. If the ignition coils in your 2003 Maxima appear scorched, then keep reading below. If you're ready to check out our prices, then continue on to see how much money you can save on this type of repair.

2003 Nissan Maxima Ignition Coil

Ignition Coils For 2003 Nissan Maxima

2003 was the second year the Maxima used the big 3.5L VQ35DE V6 engine. It uses 6 individual ignition coils, and unlike the previous years, all 6 coils are exactly the same. The ECU in this year Maxima also doesn't measure the voltage from the ignition coils like the previous models, which makes diagnosing a bad ignition coil very easy. As these coils age, they can fail causing the engine to misfire, or run very rough. Buying all 6 ignition coils locally is very expensive as these coils can cost from $50 to $100 each. This year Maxima also had a grounding problem. The main ground had a tendency to break with engine movement, causing all sorts of problems including fried ignition coils, or ECU. This is when the ignition coils look scorched or melted. Make sure to check the ground in your 2003 Maxima before replacing the ignition coils. We will talk more about this later. It's highly recommended to replace all 6 coil packs at the same time of one fails and the rest are 7 years or older. If you are unsure, it's best to replace all 6 to be safe. As these age, they tend to fail not far apart from one another. It's better and more cost effective to replace all 6 rather than changing one at a time. Each time you will have to re-diagnose the problem, and remove the intake manifold.

2003 Nissan Maxima Ground Problems with Ignition Coils

The 2003-2008 Nissan Maxima had an issue with the main ground cable breaking off. This cable goes from the transmission to the negative terminal on the battery. When it breaks, many of the electrical components can fail, mainly the ignition coils and the ECU (main computer). When this happens, your ignition coils will appear to be scorched or melted. If you are replacing the ignition coil packs in your Maxima and notice this, STOP IMMEDIATELY and check your grounds! Installing new ignition coils will do no good as they will fail very shortly if it doesn't happen the moment you turn the key. You will also want to check the ECU as it can become damaged once the ground cable breaks. Replace the ground cable and make sure your ECU is operating properly before attempting to install new ignition coils. Ensuring all grounds and the ECU is intact before doing this will ensure your 2003 Nissan Maxima will run great for many years to come. Our goal is to save you money not just on parts, but by informing you of important things that can cost you more money, such as replacing the coil packs with a bad ground. Removing the intake manifold is a medium task, but very straight forward as the intake manifold is designed to be removed easily for spark plug replacement. If you are not sure how to diagnose a check engine light, you can always purchase an OBDII scanner at many online retailers for a very low cost. Usually under $20 for a good entry level OBDII scanner.
