Here, we are going to give you tips on identifying a misfire, narrowing the problem down, and what it takes to fix the problem.

2010 Mercury Grand Marquis Misfire Symptoms

If your 2010 Grand Marquis is misfiring, you may notice it very much so when you step on the gas. Misfires can get bad when the engine is put under a load. Many owners can feel the misfires while accelerating, but say that their Grand Marquis feels smooth when at cruising speed. This is certainly a misfire, and it happens often. Sometimes you may get a check engine light, other times, you will not. If you have a check engine light on, then it's a good thing. You can simply plug in any basic OBDII scanner to find out why it's on, and work on a diagnosis from there. You can find a basic OBDII scanner for under $20 at many online retailers. If you do not have a check engine light on, then you will need to do a Mode 6 scan. The PCM computer in the 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis records all misfires, and with a Mode 6 OBDII scanner you will be able to view these misfires. First, check out our guide on Mode 6 Diagnostics for your 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis. Once you've viewed the video, and you have figured out which cylinder the misfire is coming from, you can then start swapping the ignition coils to a different cylinder. If the misfire code follows the coil that you moved, then you know for sure that the ignition coil is bad. If the code does not follow the ignition coil, then it could be something else like a bad spark plug, fuel injector, MAF, Cam or crank sensor, or wiring issue.

Replacing the ignition coils on a 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis

This job is very straight forward. While it may take a beginner about 2 hours or so to do this, if you have any experience working on your Grand Marquis, this can be done in 45 minutes. All you need is a 7mm socket, and a couple of different length extensions. The fuel rail does not need to be removed for this as many think it does. You can simply swing the coil around the fuel rail one it is unbolted.
