Replacing all 4 coils in the Element

The industry standard recommendation is to replace all 4 coils at the same time if one fails. We recommend the same thing if the coils are 7 years or older. If they are newer, you can usually get away with replacing just one. This is recommended because when one old ignition coil fails, the rest tend to fail at the same time. Diagnosing a misfire in a Honda Element can be a bit tricky sometimes only because Honda's on-board computers in these model years don't always pinpoint which cylinder the misfire is occurring. Often times you might see something like: P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 OBDII codes all showing at the same time. This doesn't mean that all four cylinders are misfiring however. This means that the computer knows there is a misfire, but it is not able to identify which cylinder is it coming from. One way to find the misfire would be to unplug the connector while the engine is running to see if there is a change. If it gets worse or the engine shuts off, then the coil is good. If there is no change the the coil is bad. You will need an OBDII scanner to scan for a check engine light. Don't worry however. These aren't expensive and start at around $10.

Common things most owners of the Element notice when they have a bad ignition coils is a misfire and a rough running engine. This is usually accompanied by a check engine light as well. Once the check engine light is on, you will be able to scan the vehicle computer and figure out what is causing the issue.
