Ignition Coils for 2004 Mustang GT

The 2004 Mustang GT has the SOHC (single overhead cam) 4.6L V8. This engine uses the DG508 coils. These are the coils with the slight angle in the rubber boots. Many people confuse these coils with the coil packs for the Mustang Cobra. They are different, and not interchangeable. These coils look very difficult to replace, but once you understand what this job entails, it's not crazy hard to do. It may take some time, but it is a very straight forward job. If one ignition coil in your 2004 Mustang GT fails, and the rest are old, it's just best to change out all 8. Yes, you can replace just one, but buying one coil at a time will cost more than buying the entire set of 8. Also, if the coils are old, it is very likely that more of them will fail shortly after. We have the full set of 8 lifetime warranty coil packs at an unbeatable price. If your coil packs are not old, and one failed, you might be able to get away with replacing just one, and we do sell single coils.

Diagnosing a Misfire in Your 2004 Mustang GT, With or Without a Check Engine Light

We're going to talk about a common issue with the 4.6L V8 used in the Mustang GT. Many owners will feel a misfire, but the frustrating part is that there will be no check engine light to help them identify what the issue is. There is good news. The Ford computer records misfires, even if there is no check engine light. There is an easy way to find it, and the method needed is by using an OBDII scanner with "Mode 6" function. Mode 6 allows you to see what the computer (PCM, ECU, ECM - just a few names people online call it)  is seeing. The PCM will record every single misfire, but it will not turn on the check engine light if it does not misfire above 2.3%of the firing cycle. These type of OBDII scanners start online at around $50 and up. Yes, we understand spending $50 when you are trying to save money seems too much, but don't get discouraged just yet - the dealer, or auto repair shop will charge you an ARM AND A LEG for diagnosing a misfire without a check engine light, even though this job is very easy. Not to mention, you can use the scanner over and over again on your Mustang Gt, or all of your other vehicles 1996 and newer. You can literally save thousands of dollars using this technique. Check out our article on how to find a phantom misfire in your Ford. This method works for all Fords of this generation, not just the trucks and SUVs.

If you are still unsure of which type of coil packs needed, you can always reach out to us by phone or email, and we will be happy to help you find the parts needed for your 04' Mustang GT.
