Ignition Coil Replacement For 2000 Ford F150 4.6L V8

The year 2000 was the first year Ford introduced the coil on plug design (independent ignition coils) for the 4.6L V8. The 5.4L V8 had been using the design since 1997 with lots of success. This design allowed the PCM more control over the spark. This increased performance, fuel economy, and emissions. When one of these ignition coils fails, it is best to replace all 8. This is especially true if they are original, or several years. old. Many owners of these F150s notice that the coils tend to fail at a similar time frame. sometimes it's months apart, other times it may be days apart.

If your F150 is misfiring, the easiest way to see why is to use a basic OBDII scanner. You will see codes such as P0301 through P0308. If there are no codes, but the truck occasionally misfires, you can still find these. You will need an OBDII scanner with mode 6 capabilities.  Most people don't know that the PCM still records the misfires, but if it isn't a constant misfire, it may not illuminate the check engine light. See our how-to section to learn how to easily find these misfires!
