2008 Ford Expedition Ignition Coil Packs

Pay attention closely because the 2008 Expedition uses 2 different styles of ignition coils. It uses either DG511, or DG521. The only difference between the 2 ignition coils is that DG521 has rubber boots that are just a hair longer than the DG511 coils. The rubber boots are also brown in color. Besides that, they are exactly the same. You can even swap the boots between the two coils. This is to accommodate the upgraded spark plug design to solve the broken spark plug issue that plagued Ford from 2004-2008. To tell the difference between the two, we highly recommend looking under the hood. The front ignition coils are quite easy to see. If you are not able to tell the color of the rubber boots, then check out the numbers on the top of the coils. If it starts with "3L3E" then you have the DG511 black boot coil packs. If it starts with 8L3Z, then you have the brown boot updated DG521 coil packs. When you select the engine size on this page, and it takes you to the next page, you will see two different products: M103, and M103B.  The letter B is for brown boots. This is to help you to identify which ignition coils you have in your F150.

Replacing All 8 Coil Packs in your 2008 Expedition

If the ignition coils are nearing the 7 year mark, or older, and one fails, it is best to replace all 8 coils at the same time. This is mainly because old ignition coils tend to fail not too far apart from each other. We have the full set of 8 coil packs at a significant discount over any auto parts store out there. Many times we can sell the full set for the price of just one of the dealer's ignition coils. This is not because Araparts has poor quality ignition coils. This is because we purchase is extremely large bulk to get the same great products that sell at the local auto part stores at a much lower price. Then we pass this savings on to our customers. We really like to save money and get the job done right. If we can help our customers save money at every step, we will. That is why we have our how-to section, and our You Tube account. We show you how to diagnose problems, and actually do the repair as well. We would rather you have more money in your pocket than throwing it at your Expedition.

Misfire Codes in 2008 Expedition

So the misfire codes are not a new thing to most of us wrenching for years, but just in case you don't know what they are, here it is:

P0301 (Cylinder number 1 misfire)
P0302 (Cylinder number 2 misfire)
P0303 (Cylinder number 3 misfire)
P0304 (Cylinder number 4 misfire)
P0305 (Cylinder number 5 misfire)
P0306 (Cylinder number 6 misfire)
P0307 (Cylinder number 7 misfire)
P0308 (Cylinder number 8 misfire)

You can also get these codes. They aren't always the coil itself, and can be the circuit, but a bad coil can possibly trigger one of these:

P0351 (Ignition Coil A Circuit Malfunction)
P0352 (Ignition Coil B Circuit Malfunction)
P0353 (Ignition Coil C Circuit Malfunction)
P0354 (Ignition Coil D Circuit Malfunction)
P0355 (Ignition Coil E Circuit Malfunction)
P0356 (Ignition Coil F Circuit Malfunction)
P0357 (Ignition Coil G Circuit Malfunction)
P0358 (Ignition Coil H Circuit Malfunction)

So you have the misfire code, but do you know if your Expedition really has a bad ignition coil, or another issue? There's an easy way to find out. Simply swap over the bad ignition coil to another cylinder and rescan to see if the misfire code changes to the cylinder the bad ignition coils was moved to (make sure to reset the computer and/or give it time to read - drive your Expedition around for a little bit before rescanning).
