1998 Ford Expedition Ignition Coil

1998 Ford Expedition Ignition Coils

The 1998 Expedition used 2 different types of ignition coil setups. A coil pack and spark plug wire setup for the 4.6L V8 and a coil on plug setup for the 5.4L V8. The coil pack setup was quite reliable and inexpensive to fix. It just wasn't as good as the 5.4L V8 setup. Even though the coil on plug setup on the 98 Expedition 5.4l was better, it was more expensive to repair and complicated to diagnose issues with. With time and technology however, this got a lot easier to do over time, and we show you how to do it for dirt cheap compared to any mechanic. The local auto parts dealer can charge from $50-100 just for each ignition coil. This is simply too much for the average family to afford. We are talking from $400-800 on just ignition coils. We have the full set for almost the price of just one of these. We do this not by lowering quality, but by raising our order quantity. We simply buy a lot to keep our price down, and pass these savings on to you. Not to mention, we are so confident in our products, we offer a lifetime warranty on the coils for the 1998 Ford Expedition 4.6L V8 and 5.4L V8.

1998 Ford Expedition Faulty Ignition Coil Diagnosis

Finding a bad ignition coil pack in your 1998 Expedition is quite simple actually. All you need to do is get ahold of an OBDII scanner. These devices (online) are now almost the same price as a cup of coffee, and will tell you why your check engine light is on. You just can't go wrong with owning one. When you scan the check engine light and get one of the following codes:

P0301
P0302
P0303
P0304
P0305
P0306
P0307
P0308

This means that you have a misfire, and a potentially bad ignition coil. There are many reasons why it could misfire, but a bad ignition coil is amongst the top reasons for the Expedition misfiring. To find out for sure, you can simply swap an ignition coil from the misfiring cylinder to another cylinder. Reset the code, and drive your Expedition until the service engine light comes back on. Rescan for codes, and if the new code follow the ignition coil to the cylinder it was moved to, then you know for sure you have a bad ignition coil. If it does not follow the coil, it could be a different issue causing the misfire, but at least you narrowed the problem down.

1998 Ford Expedition Ignition Coil Change

Replacing the ignition coils in the 1998 Ford Expedition could be time consuming task, but it isn't very difficult to do. In fact the front coils are much easier to change than the rear coils, so the only ones you may be spending any time at all on are the rear coils. Most experts can change all 8 coils in 30 minutes and beginners can take a couple of hours to do this. Check out our how-to section to see what kind of tools are required to do this job.
