2005

Every 2005 Ford Excursion owner will deal with a bad ignition coil as it is a part that commonly fails on these. Replacing all 8 is the most efficient way when the coils are old, and especially if they are original. Old ignition coils tend to fail within a short period of time from one another. To replace the coil packs in your '05 Excursion, you will need anything to step on (because of the height), a 7mm socket, ratchet, different length extensions, and something to wipe away debris around the coil packs if you are also planning on changing the spark plugs at the same time (don't let the debris fall into the cylinder).

2005 Ford Excursion Ignition Coil

2005 Ford Excursion Ignition Coil Packs

The 2005 Excursion only used one type of ignition coil. The part number for this is DG508. This is the most commonly used part number out of many different parts numbers. When it comes time to replace the ignition coils in these, it's usually best to replace all 8 at once. This is especially true if the ignition coils are around the 7 year old mark or older. If you are not sure of the age, it's best to replace all 8. Not only does the bundle of 8 cost a whole lot less than single ignition coils (both online and local if your store offers sets of 8 or 10), but it takes less time overall as you don't have to constantly re-diagnose the problem 8 or 10 times. The 2005 Ford Excursion uses a 5.4L V8 and a 6.8L V8. Both of these engines are 2 valve engines, despite Ford changing most of their other truck and SUV models to 3v by 2005. Honestly, just be happy you have the 2 valve engine as the 3 valve engines had the stuck spark plug issue. The 2 valve motors also had the spark plug blow out issue as well, but many people claim to have solved this by torqueing the spark plugs to 20 ft/lbs instead of the recommended 12 ft/lbs.

2005 Ford Excursion Misfire Symptoms & How to Tell if it's The Coil Packs

We speak with lots of Ford owners who have a misfire, and assume it's the ignition coils. Now this is not a bad assumption as this is the most common reasons a 2005 Ford Excursion will misfire, but it's not the only reason. There is a way to find these misfires without just throwing parts at it, or spending an arm, and a liver with the dealer to diagnose and fix the issue. First tool anyone (not just mechanics) must have is an OBDII scanner. Even if you know nothing about your Ford Excursion, being able to scan and reset the check engine light, or even walk into the auto repair shop with knowledge is priceless. If you have a check engine light on, it's a simple as scanning, seeing the code, and swapping the ignition coil from the supposed misfiring cylinder to another one. If the misfire code follows, then it's definitely a bad ignition coil. Here are the cylinder numbers for the V8 2005 Excursion, and here are the cylinder numbers for the V10 2005 Excursion. If you do not have a check engine light on, there is still a way to find the misfire by simply plugging in a scanner. It may sound crazy, but hang in there! The PCM in the 2005 Excursion records all misfires whether it turns the check engine light on or not. These can be viewed by a Mode 6 scanner. They start at $50 and up, but don't get too discouraged just yet. These tools will pay for themselves with the amount of money you will save on diagnostics and repair. We have a guide and a video on how to access Mode 6 here.
