2001 Ford Excursion Bad Ignition Coil Symptoms

A bad coil pack in your 2001 Ford Excursion will cause a misfire. The ignition coils are the number one reason why many owners experience a misfire in their Excursions, but one of the last parts that they check. With a bad ignition coil, you will feel your Excursion hesitate especially when accelerating. It may feel like the engine sputters while stepping on the gas, and runs okay while cruising. If you have a constant misfire, you will feel the engine misfire at idle as well. This will cause a check engine light to turn on with a misfire code. Grab your OBII scanner to find out what this is. OBDII scanners run under $10 online for basic ones, and they are one of the best investments you can make in your entire life while you own a vehicle. They can be used on all 1996 and newer vehicles, and you won't have to pay $100 to find out why your check engine light is on. When you scan your Excursion for codes, you will get something like P0301 through P0310. These code represent the cylinder that is misfiring. P0301= cylinder 1 misfire detected, P0302 = cylinder 2 misfire detected, and so on. From here you can swap the coil pack from the misfiring cylinder over to another cylinder. Reset the computer with your scanner or by disconnecting the battery, and drive your 2001 Excursion until the check engine light comes back on. Once that does, rescan the computer. If the code follows the coil, then you certainly have a bad ignition coil. This can eliminate wasting money by throwing parts at your Excursion.

2001 Ford Excursion Misfire, No Check Engine Light

If this is the case don't fret! You can still scan the cylinder and view which ones are misfiring. How? With a Mode 6 OBDII scanner. instead of taking your Excursion to the dealer and paying an arm, leg, and a kidney to diagnose the misfire, you can grab a cheap OBDII scanner for around $50 online. These will allow you to view what the PCM computer in your 2001 Ford Excursion is seeing. The PCM will not turn on the check engine light if the misfire is less than 2.3% of the firing cycle. The only problem with this is that owners can still feel their rigs misfiring. Check out our guide to Mode 6 diagnostics. It's 1 million times easier than you'd think!!
