To start things off, we need to know one thing. Is the check engine light on, or do you feel a misfire, but see no check engine light? If you do hav a check engine light, all you need is a basic $10 OBDII scanner. These can be found online for the price of a cup of coffee at many online retailers. If you do not have a check engine light on, but feel a misfire, then you will need an OBDII scanner with Mode 6. These start at $50, and will pay for themselves. The Mode 6 scanners allow you to view misfires before the check engine light turns on. If you take your Excursion to a dealer to do this, you will pay through the nose to get this simple diagnostic test done, and if you take it to a regular garage, they may not be aware that the 2000 Excursion had the Mode 6 technology. Not many vehicles has this type of diagnostic technology yet back in the year 2000, and if the mechanic is not aware of this, they will find other more expensive diagnostic methods to pinpoint your misfire.
