The first sign is a service engine light and a rough running engine. This commonly feels like the engine is chugging along when trying to accelerate. If you use an OBDII Scanner (really cheap item). If you scan the computer, and you get a code P0301 through P0304 or P0306, then you most likely have a bad ignition coil. There is a chance it could be something else, but most likely it is a bad ignition coil. You can find this out by swapping the bad coil to another cylinder and seeing if the code follows the coil or stays in the same spot. This will help you to narrow down your problem. If you have an occasional misfire, you can use an OBDII scanner with Mode 6 capabilities to find misfires that do not set off the check engine light. The computer records and stores all misfires, even if it doesn't turn on the check engine light.
