2000 Acura TL Ignition Coil Packs

The 2000 Acura TL uses the J32A1 3.2L V6 engine. The Type-S uses the J32A2. This engine uses one ignition coil per cylinder. As these ignition coils age, and began to fail, it's best to replace all six of them at the same time. This is recommended because these ignition coils wear in the same environment at the same exact time. While Acura does not have any type of lifespan or replacement interval, but that doesn't mean these parts do not fail. Like light bulbs, old ignition coils are recommended to be replaced in sets. There are a number of factors in your 2000 Acura TL that can cause the ignition coils to prematurely fail. One way these can fail early is by using spark plugs with a gap too large. The gap for the 2000 Acura TL 3.2 (Type-S included) is 0.044. Any larger and the ignition coils will need to work harder to do the same job, causing to fail prematurely. Another way which is really common is improperly washing the engine bay. Getting the water hose, or pressure washer close to the connectors will cause water to get into the connector, or even down into the spark plug holes, damaging the ignition coils. The most rare, but possible thing is a faulty ECU can damage the ignition coils. The ECU sends a very quick 12v to the ignition coils. A bad ECU may let the signal stay on for too long essentially burning the coils up rapidly. Other issues such as bad grounds, or even arching a tool on the battery, starter or alternator can also damage the ignition coils. We have ASE technicians working for us, and some of us have experienced many of these things first hand.

There are other factors that can contribute to a failed ignition coil such as rain leaking down the plastic wiper cowl and onto the coils, or a coolant hose bursting and spraying coolant all over the ignition coils. Bad valve cover gaskets can allow oil to seep into the spark plug holes (very common), filling them with oil requiring the ignition coil and spark plugs to be replaced on the affected cylinders. Those who own a TL in a humid state or region can also experience sooner than expected ignition coil failure.
