The Ignition coil packs in the VWs of this age are a common replacement item. The coil pack in the VWs are called "coil pack" because all 6 coils are packed together in 1 unit. This is known as the "square style", which physically has a rectangle shaped connector. An ignition coil pack such as this one for your VW is a crucial part of your ignition system. Ignition coil is a miniature power transformer, which converts the 12v in your vehicle electrical system into tens of thousands of volts. This will send the voltage to the spark plug, and ignite the fuel. Ignition coils wear out over time.
