Ignition Coil DIY for 2001-2005 5 cylinder Volvo S60

Tools needed:

  • T30 Torx bit  (8 torx bolts)
  • 10mm socket with ratchet (a small extension would make it easier, but it's not needed)

This is a much easier job than you would imagine!

1: Remove the two plastic Volvo covers. There are a total of 8 T30 torx bolts total that hold them on.

2: After the bolts are removed, remove the clips on the plastic timing belt cover to completely remove it.

3: Now that the covers are off, you have full access to the coils. Disconnect each connector, and use our 10mm socket to remove the bolts.

4: Remove and the install is the reverse of the install.

In gereral, we usually recommend to disconnect the battery when doing any kind of electrical work. While it isn't required, I've made some "oops" errors that cost me some blown fuses (easy fix) such as arching the ratchet on two pieces of metal if you set your ratchet down near the alternator, etc. Be careful where you place your tools before doing any job. Thank you, and a how-to DIY video will be coming in the future!
