2000-2002 Lincoln LS 3.0L V6 Spark Plug & Ignition Coil Replacement (removing the intake manifold/Plenum)

The 2000-2005 Lincoln LS V6 has three ignition coils underneath the intake manifold/plenum. This will need to be removed completely to access the three coils. No, you cannot scoot it out of the way. In fact, you don't want to try and scoot it out of the way. Removing it may seem intimidating as there seems to be a lot going on, but this is actually not a difficult job If you know where all of the bolts are. That is the exact reason we decided to make this extremely detailed how-to video. We want to help turn a $500-$1,000 or higher tune-up quote into a job just a hair over 100 bucks - when shopping with us of course. The car in the video is a 2000 Lincoln LS 3.0L V6. This is exactly the same on the 2000-2002 Lincoln LS, and similar for the 2003-2005 LS. The 2003-2005 had some changes in the intake manifold, but the process is still very similar. This will also be a similar job for the 2000-2002 Jaguar S-type, and early model 2003 S-type, and 2003-2008 models as well. 2003-2008 model S-type is also different as the manifold on this car has also been changed as well.

Tools you will need for this job:

  • 8mm regular and deep socket
  • 10mm regular and deep socket
  • 11mm deep socket
  • 12mm regular and deep socket
  • 13mm regular socket (to remove wipers)
  • Several extensions
  • Depending your tool set, it will be beneficial to have different adapters to cross use 1/4 inch, 3/8, and 1/2 inch drive ratchets extensions and sockets.
  • Needle nose pliers.
  • Flat heat screwdriver, or whatever you need to remove the hose clamps...since nearly all of them have been changed out by now.
  • Coolant - depending on how much you spill
  • A magnet may come in handy if you tend to drop bolts

One important component to watch out for in this job is the EGR valve and tube. Be careful not to lean on the vale and tube as the tube can crack. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY sells this part. It's discontinued, and there are no aftermarket companies that make this part. If you wish to remove the large nut by the EGR, it's 27mm. We didn't record replacing the driver's side bank of ignition coils mainly because it is an extremely easy and straight forward process as there is nothing covering them. Coils simply come off with an 8mm bolt, and use your 5/8 spark plug tool to remove spark plugs. Installation is reverse process.

A few things to remember:

  1. The driver's side wiper are is longer than the passenger's side wiper arm
  2. Out of the main eight 8mm bolts that hold the manifold down, 4 are much longer. You will see exactly where they go in the video.
  3. If you notice oil on your ignition coils and spark plugs, now is a GREAT time to replace the valve cover gaskets.

Watch and enjoy the amount of money you will save!
