Single Ignition Coil for Your Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury (DG508 interchange):

The reference/interchange number for these ignition coils is "DG508". More original part numbers are included in the information above to help as well. These come with a 2.5g packet of silicone dielectric grease. This grease is to be used on the bottom of the inside of each boot where it contacts the spark plug. It is not to be inserted in the 12v plug in connector.  Ignition coils wear out over time. Over the years, high and low temperature changes, humidity, and even bad grounds and electrical problems can cause ignition coils to fail, or not perform at full capacity. This can cause a misfire, also referred to as hiccups or surging. An ignition coil (also referred to as coil pack, coil on plug/COP, coil over plug)  is a crucial part of your ignition system. An Ignition coil is a miniature open circuit power transformer, which converts the 12v in your Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury electrical system into 35,000 volts. The voltage is transferred to the spark plug, and ignites the fuel. 

Because all 8 of the ignition coils wear in the same environment, it is usually best to replace old ignition coils all at the same time if they are several years old. This will save money or time on labor, however this single ignition coil is available for those who may not have old ignition coils in their vehicle. In this case, purchasing one is just fine. It isn't too abnormal fo an ignition coil to go bad, even in a newer vehicle. Other causes are washing the engine bay, and rain. On some of the E-vans/Econoline, it is known that water from the wiper cowl may leak onto the rear coils. Also, for some of the 1997-2002 5.4L V8 F150 trucks and Expeditions, the wire that leads to the number 8 coil may rub on the fuel pressure regulator and short out. Be sure to check this wire. The DG508 style ignition coil is a commonly replaced item in most of the Ford cars, trucks and SUV. In some instances of minor misfiring on Ford Lincoln or Mercury vehicles, the check engine light will not illuminate. This is because the PCM does not illuminate a check engine light unless the misfire is more than 2.3% of the firing time. It does however still record the misfire.
