2005 Nissan Altima Ignition Coil

Ignition Coils For 2005 Nissan Altima

If your 2005 Nissan Altima has been misfiring, chances are it may have a bad ignition coil. Common misfire error codes are P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, and P0306. You can move the coils around and check the codes once more to see if the codes follow the misfire. Make sure to check the grounds (specifically the main ground) on both the 2.5 and 3.5 2005 Altima as these have been known to break and cause electrical problems with the PCM and ignition coils. Replacing the ignition coils in the 2.5L Altima is a very simple process as all 4 ignition coils are right on top of the motor (underneath the engine decorative cover). The V6 has 3 front ignition coils that are very easy to access, but the 3 rear coils are underneath the intake manifold. Don't let this intimidate you! This was designed to be removed for service without too much trouble. All you really need is some pliers to remove the vacuum hose clamps, a T30 Torx driver to remove the plastic engine cover, an extension, and a 10mm and 12mm socket. To see full details, see our Nissan how to section to see exactly how to do this and what tools are needed for this job.

Cost of Ignition Coil Replacement For 2005 Nissan Altima

For the 2.5L 4 Cylinder Altima, this can range from $340 all the way to $500, and for the 3.5L V6, this can range from $460 to $700. Many shops may charge more as they need to mark the prices up. This doesn't include $100 for diagnosing the issues. We would like to help you save on these costs. We already included a how-to for replacing, but what about the diagnostic? To find the problem, you will need an OBDII scanner. These can be found for under $20 at many online retailers and will save you TONS of money for the future as they can be used on ALL 1996 and newer vehicles sold in the USA. When your check engine light comes on, you will be able to find out why it's on with your scanner. If you have a misfire, you will get one of the following codes:

P0300 (Random Misfire Detected)

P0301 (Cylinder Number 1 Misfire Detected)
P0302 (Cylinder Number 2 Misfire Detected)
P0303 (Cylinder Number 3 Misfire Detected)
P0304 (Cylinder Number 4 Misfire Detected)
P0305 (Cylinder Number 5 Misfire Detected)
P0306 (Cylinder Number 6 Misfire Detected)

Once you locate the cylinder number of the misfire, you can trade that ignition coil with a coil from a cylinder that is not misfiring. Reset the ECM and drive your Altima around until the check engine light comes back on. If the misfire follows the coil that was moved, then you will know for sure that the coil is bad. If the misfire code is still exactly the same, then the ignition coil is not bad. You will want to check your MAF, Camshaft and Crankshaft sensors, fuel injectors, wiring, etc to find what the problem is. Worst case scenario is a faulty ECM computer or internal engine damage causing the misfire.
