Ignition Coils for 2005 Ford Thunderbird

2005 was the last year of the Thunderbird, and yes, it still uses the DG515 coils. The 3.9l V8 was the only engine available for this year. If you want to replace all of the ignition coils, you need to know that there are 8 individual coil on plugs. Replacing all 8 coil packs can be pricey if you have shopped at the local auto parts stores. Here you will find our ignition coils much cheaper than the coils at any local auto parts store or dealer. Many people ask us if it is okay to replace just one ignition coil. We recommend to replace all 8 only if they are around the 7 year old mark, and one fails. The reason why we recommend this is because when one coil pack goes bad, the others are likely to fail soon. We constantly hear of people who replace 1 old coil only to have another one fail within the next month or so. Replacing all 8 ignition coils at the same time will also save you money on the pack of 8 rather than buying one at a time. Single ignition coils are more expensive both online and at local stores.

2005 Thunderbird Bad Coil Pack Diagnosis

Diagnosing a bad ignition coil in your 2005 Ford Thunderbird isn't as hard as you would think. There are 2 methods to use We highly recommend getting an OBDII scanner. These can be purchased anywhere from under $10 online to $20  at local stores. If you want to be able to see more information, get an OBDII scanner with Mode 6 capabilities. These start at around $50 online. Remember Mode 6 because we will bring it up a little later. When an ignition coil is bad, you will have a check engine light. Any basic OBDII scanner will be able to identify which ignition coil is bad. Once you find out which ignition coil is bad, you can swap the coil in question over to another cylinder. Reset the check engine light, and drive the vehicle. If the check engine light comes back on and the misfire follows the coil, then you know for sure you have a bad ignition coil pack. If the misfire remains on the same cylinder, then you may have another issue.

Finding a Misfire in a 2005 Ford Thunderbird With No Check Engine Light

Yes, this can happen and it's frustrating. Many Ford owners report feeling a misfire, but there is no check engine light on to allow you to find out what's wrong, but what you didn't know is that even if there is no check engine light, the computer in your Thunderbird still records and stores misfires! The way to pull these up is with an OBDII scanner that has a Mode 6 function. Using Mode 6, you will be able to see exactly how many times each cylinder misfired, if it is misfiring at all. The computer will not turn on the check engine light if the misfire is under 2.3% of the firing cycle. See our how-to section to find out just how to find these misfires!
