2006 F250 Ignition Coil Packs

2006 Ford F250 Ignition Coil Packs

The 2006 Ford F250 uses 2 different gasoline engines; a 3v 5.4L V8 and a 3v 6.8L V10. Both of these engines share the exact same DG511 ignition coil. These trucks had issues with the ignition coils failing more than the average vehicle. On top of this, there was a design flaw with the spark plugs that cause them to seize up and break off in the head. For this reason, if you plan on changing your spark plugs along with your ignition coils, we recommend doing this job while the engine is still warm. The ignition coils in the 2006 F250 are usually replace in full sets if they are over 7 years old and failing. Old ignition coils tend to fail a few months apart from each other. There are some F250 owners who have experienced ignition coils failing just days apart. Though this isn't common and only happens during extreme weather changes (extreme cold and heat), this is still a reality.

2006 F250 Misfire Due to Failed Ignition Coil Pack

This type of misfire in your 2006 F250 can be identified by a rough running engine upon acceleration. While it isn't always the ignition coil that can cause this issue, it is the most common in the 2006 Ford F250. If you own an OBDII scanner, you will typically see something like a P0301, P0302, P0303, etc. The last number represents the cylinder where the misfire is being detected. One easy way to find out for sure if it is the ignition coil or something else is to swap the coil to another cylinder. If your P0302 turns into P0301, and you moved coil on cylinder #2 to cylinder #1, then you will know for sure that you have a bad ignition coil. If your original code is P0302, you swap the coil, and it is still P0302, then you have a different issue. Make sure you reset the computer and drive your truck to give the computer enough time to read and record the misfire on the new cylinder. Moving too fast here can cause a false reading. When the computer thrown a service engine light, and you fix the issue, the service engine light may not go away immediately. This is why it is important to clear the codes so you don't get a false old reading.
