Ignition Coil For 2005 Ford Explorer V8

Ignition Coils For 2005 Ford Explorer

2005 was the last year Ford used the 2v engine in the V8 Explorer. There were 2 engines available for the 2005 model year: a 4.0L V6 and a 4.6L V8. The V6 uses 1 coil pack, the V8 uses 8 individual coil packs. The ignition coils for the 2005 Explorer V8 (DG508) commonly fail. Many 2005 Explorer owners have experienced a bad ignition coil at some point during their ownership. This misfire feels like the engine is hesitating while trying to accelerate, and the engine will feel smooth while cruising. You may still be able to feel the misfire while cruising, but very lightly. There is also the occasional misfire. This feels like the occasional hiccup, or "putting" feeling. Sometimes the check engine light doesn't turn on for occasional misfires, but there are still ways to find these using a mode 6  scanner. Most owners of the 2005 Ford Explorer don't know that the computer records and stores every single misfire. With a standard OBDII scanner, you will not be able to see anything unless the service engine light is on, but with a OBDII with mode 6, you will be able to see which cylinders misfired, and exactly how many times. Yes! you can actually do this. Check out the ignition coil section in our how-to page to see the video we made on how to do this. It is actually much cheaper than you would expect.

2005 Ford Explorer Consequences of Driving With A Misfire

The obvious signs of driving with a misfire are bad catalytic converter, however it would take quite a bit of time to damage you catalytic converter from a misfire. We recommend diagnosing and fixing your car as soon as possible. In reality, driving for a short period of time will not hurt a bad catalytic converter that is in good condition. What we have noticed however is that many owners will drive several months with a misfiring engine. We highly recommend against doing this, and it can definitely shorten the life of your catalytic converter. Many owners may also experience a code P0420 if there is a misfire, indicating a bad catalytic converter, but that code can appear as the result of a misfire. Unburned fuel in the exhaust will make the computer think something is wrong with the catalytic converter, even if there is nothing wrong with it. Simply erasing the codes after repairing the misfire will solve this issue.

2005 Ford Explorer Cost To Replace Ignition Coils

The price of each ignition coil at most brick and mortar stores ranges from $40 to $80. A few dealerships charge more, as well, which is completely insane. We have the full set of 8 for almost the price of 1 of the dealer coils. Yes, you read that correctly, and it is not because our coils are poorly made. We are able to do this by purchasing a large volume at once and selling  directly to our customers.

Make sure to select the engine size of your 2005 Ford Explorer to learn which ignition coil packs are right for your SUV.
