Ignition Coil for 2003 Ford Explorer V8

Ignition Coils for 2003 Ford Explorer

The 2003 Ford Explorer has a 4.0L V6 with a single coil pack, and a 4.6L V8 with 8 individual coil packs. The V8 uses the DG508 ignition coils. These have a slight angle on the rubber boot. Above is a picture of what the ignition coil looks like. If the coils are in the vehicle, they will appear to not have an angle until you remove them and see the rest of the boot. These are very straight forward replacement. If all of the ignition coils are over 7 years old, and one fails, you will need to replace all 8. This is because as they ignition coils age, they age together and tend to fail within a short period of time from one another. Purchasing these ignition coils at the brick and mortar stores can be quite costly. Usually around $40 and up for EACH ignition coil pack. This is simply too much for many families. We have worked hard to get a high quality aftermarket ignition coil available at an unbelievable price. We do this by purchasing several thousand coils at a single time, allowing us to get an amazing price. The local stores only purchase a few at a time, hence the large price.

Diagnosing a Bad Coil Pack in Your 2003 Ford Explorer

There are a few scenarios here. One common one is a very prominent misfire, and a service engine light either on or flashing, and the other is an occasional misfire with or without a check engine light. This first scenario happens when you have an ignition coil that is completely dead. In this case, you will also notice very rough acceleration and smooth cruising. You may also be able to feel the engine misfiring at idle.  The other scenario is an occasionally misfiring ignition coil. You will notice this as an occasional misfire or hiccup feeling. This may be a lot more noticeable when you put the engine in your Explorer under a load (accelerating, towing, uphill driving, etc). If you don't have a check engine light on, there are ways to find the misfire. Keep this in mind: the computer (PCM) in your 2003 Ford Explorer records ALL misfires, even if it doesn't turn on the check engine light. If you have an OBDII scanner with mode 6, you can pull up these misfires on this type of scanner. You can find one of these for $50 starting online. Sure it may seem like a lot of money now, but when you find out how much the mechanic or a local dealer will charge to find this problem, you will be singing for joy at the cost of a mode 6 scanner. Not to mention, you can use this on every vehicle you own that is 1996 or newer. This will save you money for years to come.
