2001 Ford E150 ignition Coil Packs

The coil packs in the 2001 Ford E150 are a common failure point, and changing these coils just looks like an awfully difficult experience, but it's not as bad as you might think. We do a full how-to right here to help you feel more confident in doing this job yourself, so keep reading. The 2001 Ford E150 comes with 2 different gasoline engines; a 2 valve 4.6L V8 and a 2 valve 5.4L V8. Both of these engines suffered from spark plug blow out issues that plagued Ford for a long time. If your 2001 Ford E150 has a bad coil pack, and the coils are original or you are not sure of the age, it's best to change all 8. Many E150 owners see failures of these DG508 ignition coils during extreme hot and cold weather. There are also other reasons why the ignition coils can fail soon in your 2001 Ford E150 such as spark plug gap too large, or even thing like a spark plug blow out can damage an ignition coil. Spark plug blow out is an issue that many Ford owners are familiar with. This happens because there were not enough threads in the cylinder head, and the recommended torque of 11 ft/lbs was not enough. Many mechanics recommend 20 ft/lbs. This allowed the spark plugs to back out a little bit until they were barely holding on by a couple of threads, then they blow out and take the threads with them

Replacing The Rear Coils In Your 2001 Ford E150

When you open your E150 van's hood, you'll notice that there is very limited space, and the rear ignition coils in the 2001 Ford E150 van are not visible at all. This causes many people to give up before starting, and take their vehicles to the auto shop for diagnosis and repair. Don't forget that there is an access panel inside the cabin of your 2001 Ford E150. There are 4 clips that hold it down. You can simply remove this service cover, and get to work on the back coils. The coils in the back are probably easier than the front coils. The driver's side bank is very easily accessible. We do recommend unplugging the fuel injectors only because it is pretty easy to accidentally get your hand or tools caught on the wires, and tear them. The passenger's side bank is very straight forward, but there are heater hoses and a PCV hose covering the rear coils. These hoses can be scooted out of the way to remove the coils. For the passenger's side, we recommend you have a magnet at least. The 2001 Ford E150 uses 7mm bolts to hold the coil packs down. The fuel rail will not have to be removed to do this job. We have heard from customers that have removed the fuel rail, and there is no need. Once you remove the bolt, the coil pack can simply be move right around the fuel rail.
