2003 Nissan Altima Ignition Coil

Ignition Coils For 2003 Nissan Altima

The 2003 NIssan Altima came with 2 engines. The 2.5 4 cylinder and the 3.5L V6. As the coils age in both of these vehicles, it will be time to replace them. If the coils are several years old (or original) it is best to replace all of the coils at once. The ignition coils are not too difficult of a job to do. The 2.5 is very easy. The 3.5 is a moderately easy job. The hardest part is removing the intake manifold, but it was designed to be removed without too much unnecessary work. Other causes of ignition coil failures are grounding problems. To be more specific, the main ground (negative battery cable) can break causing all sorts of problems. One of them is a completely fried ignition coil, and by friend, we mean fried, melted, scorched. This is not how ignition coils fail This is an indication of a ground that is missing, and the electricity decides to use the coils (or even the ECU) as a ground instead. Make sure the grounds are good before replacing the ignition coils.

2003 Nissan Altima Warning Before Replacing Ignition Coils

The 3.5L V6 Altima had a known issue with the main ground cable breaking off and causing all sorts of electrical issues. This cable goes from the transmission to the negative terminal on the battery. Signs of a bad ground are the ignition coils will appear to be scorched or melted. To our understanding, this issue was more common with the 3.5L V6, but we highly recommend checking the ground cable on the 2.5L 4 Cylinder as well before you replace the ignition coils. If you install new ignition coils, and the ground cable is damaged, the new coils will fail very soon, if not the moment you start your vehicle. This would be a disaster as you would have to spend more money on ignition coils a second time around, and we don't want you to have to waste money on something that can be prevented. If the grounds are good, but you still have a misfire with a check engine light on, then you can find this misfire with any basic OBDII scanner. These days, these can be found for under $20. In some cases for even the price of a cup of coffee for a basic entry level scanner.
