2007 Ford F250 Ignition Coils

2007 Ford F250 Coil Packs

The 2007 Ford F250 uses the 3v head. Contrary to many beliefs, the 2007 still uses the DG511 ignition coils. These are the black boot, not the brown boot coils. The F250 Didn't get the revised spark plug and coil design until mid 2008. The 2007 F250s suffered from a bad 2 piece spark plug design that caused all sorts of problems when removing. These had the tendency to seize up and break off inside the cylinder head - a nightmare that most mechanics don't want to deal with.  If you chose to change your spark plugs at the same time you are changing your coil packs, make sure to do this job while the engine is warm. When these coil packs are around 7 years old, and one fails, it's best to replace the rest of the coils at the same time. Failure usually can happen during an extreme weather change. Many F250 owners may notice more than 1 old ignition coil pack failing within one or two weeks when this happens.

How To Tell if Your 2007 Ford F250 Has a Bad Coil Pack

The 2007 Ford F250 has come very obvious symptoms of a misfire, but there can be many reasons for the misfire. The usual symptom is feeling the engine skip here and there. Many people describe this feeling as surging, or hiccupping. You may or may not have a service engine light on. We will start with those who have the service engine light on, because this is the easiest way to diagnose. If you get an OBDII scanner, you are able to easily diagnose what the issue is. You will have a code P0301 Through P0310. From here you can inspect the cylinder that is misfiring. You will want to check the ignition coil, the fuel injector, the spark plug, and the harness for the coil and fuel injector. You can unplug the harness to see if any change in the engine idle speed happens. This only works if the ignition coil or fuel injector is completely dead. Then there is the other frustrating issue that 2007 Ford F250 owners deal with; phantom misfires. This happens when you can feel the misfires, but there is no check engine light. The PCM will record and store every misfire, but it will not always turn on the check engine light. The vehicle must misfire more than 2.3% of the firing cycle for the service engine light to turn on. These misfires recorded by the PCM can be viewed on a Mode 6 OBDII scanner. These type of scanners start at around $50 online, and this price is a whole lot cheaper than paying a mechanic for a diagnostic.
