Ignition Coil For 2002 Ford F250

2002 Ford F250 Super Duty Ignition Coil Packs and Diagnostic Help

The 2002 F250 Super duty uses one DG508 ignition coil per cylinder. All 2002 F250s are Super duty models. Each ignition coil sits right over the spark plugs, and they transfer the 12v to tens of thousands of volts. Many of our customers ask if they need to replace the wires. These trucks do not use spark plug wires. Each ignition coil plugs into the engine wire harness. These connectors do not wear out, and do not need to be replaced unless they are damaged (cracked, splitting or broken wires). When the ignition coils start to fail, they tend to fail not too far apart from each other. This is especially true if the coils in your 2002 F250 are around the 7 year or older mark. If they are original, and one fails, then it's definitely best to replace all 8, or 10 (if you have the 6.8L V10 in the truck). There are many factors that can cause the coils to fail. One of the main factors is humidity. Humidity is the biggest enemy of the ignition coils. Many people who live in humid states like Texas, Florida, Louisiana, etc end up replacing their ignition coils much sooner than people in other states.

Finding a Misfire In Your 2002 Ford F250 Super Duty

These trucks were famous for their phantom misfires. This is what happens when you can feel a misfire, but there is no service engine light on, there is an easy way to find these misfires. The PCM in the 2002 F250 still records and stores the misfires, but it doesn't always turn on the check engine light. They can be accessed with a Mode 6 OBDII scanner, which starts at around $50 online. May seem expensive, but it will blow any diagnostic charge from any mechanic out of the water. First things first, you want to plug the OBDII scanner in the OBDII port underneath the dashboard by the driver's foot well while the ignition is in the "ON" position (dash lights ON, engine OFF). Plug the scanner in, and head to non continuous monitors (some scanners say diagnostic monitor tests). You will go to test id $53 (dollar sign part of hexadecimal language) and from there you will be able to see how many times each cylinder misfired, and if the PCM thinks there is a problem or not. From here you can further diagnose the specific cylinder to find out what is causing the issue.

2002 F250 Super Duty OBDII Port Not Working/No Power

Pay attention because this is specific to the 2002-2004 Model F250 Super duty (all 2002 models were super duty). If your OBDII port doesn't work, the #12 fuse is most likely blown. It shares the same fuse with the cigarette lighter. The other years did not have the same fuse box as the one we are sharing in the image. If your scanner doesn't turn at all, then you most likely have a blown fuse. Your OBDII port will not work with a blown fuse. This can be the cause of the 20A fuse #12 (only for the 2002, 2003, and 2004 model F250) being blown. It is the cigarette lighter/OBDII port fuse, so if your cigarette lighter doesn't work, then your OBDII port won't work either. They also call this port the DLC (data link connector). Remember, the picture in the link is ONLY for 2002-2004 F250. The 2001 and older has a different fuse panel, so keep this in mind as well. The older models still run off of the cigarette lighter as well, but on fuse 3.
