2003 Ford E150 Van Ignition Coil Packs

The 2003 Ford E150 uses the 2 valve 4.6L V8 and 5.4L V8. These engines share the exact same DG508 ignition coil. Ignition coil failure is a very common issue with these vans. There are other common related problems like spark plug blow out which can damage ignition coils along with the threads in the head. This can also damage the ignition coil as well. In this case, you can purchase one ignition coil to replace the bad one instead of changing all 8. If all 8 coil packs are over 7 years old and one fails, this is a different scenario. In this case, it's best to replace all 8 coils as they will all start to fail soon. Old ignition coils tend to go bad in sets, similar to headlight bulbs. It's best to get the set of 8 coil packs as the full sets are much cheaper than buying one ignition coil at a time. We do have single coil packs available if you don't have the money for all 8.

Cost of Ignition Coil Replacement For 2003 Ford E150 Van

Depending on if you take your E150 Van to the dealer or a small shop, you will still be spending a good amount of money on the repair. We are estimating the cost to be anywhere from $550 on the low end to $1250 on the high end. There is a lot of money that can be saved in between, and we want to help you save it. To start with saving money on this job, get yourself an OBDII check engine light scanner. If you can feel a misfire, but there's no check engine light, then get yourself an OBDII scanner with Mode 6. Regular OBDII scanners start at under $10 online, and Mode 6 scanners start at around $50 online. If your 2003 Ford E150 is misfiring, then you can find out exactly why using your basic OBDII scanner. Any error codes from P0301 through P0308 will indicate a misfire. From here you want to move the ignition coils to a different cylinder and rescan for codes. If the OBDII error code followed the coil that you moved, then you know for sure that you have a bad ignition coil. If you have a misfire, but don't have a check engine light on, then you will want to go into Mode 6. Grab the proper OBDII scanner, and connect it just like you would any other scanner. Now once you are into the menu, go into non continuous monitors, or diagnostic monitors. Select test ID $53 (for 97-06 E150 and Econoline vans). Once in this mode, you can view how many times each cylinder had a misfire, and if the computer thinks it's okay or not. Once you get into this step, you can proceed to swapping the ignition coils.

Replacing The Back Coil Packs in Your 2003 Ford E150 Van

The back ignition coils are so far back, it will make anybody just not even try to do this job and take it straight to the shop. We want to remind any E150 owners that there is an engine access panel inside the cabin of the van also. This access panel can be removed with a few clips to gain easy access the back coils. Using this method will make this job like any other ignition coil replacement job. The coils are held on by a 7mm bolt. We recommend a few different length extensions, and a swivel socket to make things easier.
