2002 Ford E150 Van Ignition Coil

Ignition Coils For 2002 Ford E150 Van

If you have a misfire in your 2002 Ford E150, then you most likely have a bad ignition coil. While this is obviously not always the reason why your E Van can misfire, this is one of the most common reasons for a misfiring engine. The same goes for the 4.6L V8 and the 5.4L V8 as they share the same exact DG508 curved rubber boot ignition coils. It's best to replace all 8 coils at the same time if you have no idea the age of the coil packs, or if you think they are original. 2002 is long enough ago to say for sure that if one of the original coils goes bad, then you are going to save more money by replacing all 8. If you change just one original ignition coil that went bad, there is a chance another one can fail soon, especially during a cold snap or heat wave. Having to re-diagnose the problem, and then take everything apart 8 different times is just not smart. We understand that lots of companies want to save money by replacing single ignition coils, but the price of shipping, and time to go back underneath the hood several times will take away from any savings. Full sets of 8 coils are much better for your 2002 Ford E150 van because of the shipping costs are not much more than shipping just one ignition coil.

Cost of Ignition Coils For Your 2002 Ford E150 Van

Ignition coil cost at the local auto parts store will range from $40 for each coil to about $100 at some auto stores and dealers. Diagnostic can run from $100, and labor can run from $150 to $250. You're looking at $570 to about $1,150 to pay a mechanic to find a misfire and change out all 8 ignition coils. Who really wants to spend this much? There are so many ways to save money on this job starting with the parts. These prices you see for ignition coils for your 2002 Ford E150 van are what is normal for local mechanics. This job can be done for a lot less if you do it yourself. This isn't a complicated job. The rear coils look difficult to reach, but the are not meant to be reached from the front. There is a rear engine access panel that can be removed easily to expose the rear ignition coil packs. It might even be a little crazy to say the rear ignition coils are easier to reach than the front coils. Do remove the ignition coils, you will need a 7mm socket, and a couple of different length extensions. We also recommend a magnet just in case you drop something. The driver's side bank of coil packs is very easy to reach on the 2002 Ford E150 Van. The passenger's side is covered by heater hoses, and a PCV hose. These can easily be scooted out of the way, but the visibility is not is good as the driver's side. At the end of the day, this job is not difficult to do.

How to Find a Misfire in Your 2002 Ford E150

There are 2 different kinds of misfires in the 2002 Ford E150. Misfire with check engine light on, and misfire with no check engine light. This is the same whether your van has the 2v 4.6L V8 or the 2v 5.4L V8 engine. For a check engine light on in your 2002 Ford E150, you will need a basic OBDII scanner. You can find these for under $10 online. Simply plug the OBDII scanner in (key in ON position, engine OFF) and scan for codes. If you have a P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, or P0308, then you have a misfire, and need to swap the coil to find out for sure if that is your issue. Depending on which ignition coil is bad, you will either be removing the air box and air intake (front ignition coil pack bad on 2002 E150 Van) or you will be removing the engine service cover inside the van (rear ignition coil pack bad on 2002 E150 van) and swapping the ignition coil over to another cylinder. Reset the PCM in your 2002 Ford E150, and drive the van until the check engine light comes back on. Once it comes back on, rescan for codes to see if the misfire followed the ignition coil or not. This method will tell you for sure if you will need to replace the ignition coils in your van.

2002 Ford E150 Misfire, But No Check Engine Light

This is a common occurrence on both the 4.6L V8 and 5.4L V8 used in the 2002 Ford E150. The PCM does not turn on the check engine light unless the misfire is severe enough. Many owners complain of severe misfires while putting the engine under a load. In this case you will want to get a Mode 6 OBDII scanner. These start at about $50 online. Don't let the $50 scare you however. A cost for a mechanic to diagnose a misfire like this will most likely cost more than $100. Depending on the garage you take your E150 van to, not all of them are aware that these had a Mode 6, and instead of utilizing this incredible diagnostic mode available in the 2002 E150, they will use other more expensive ways to diagnose the misfire, which can literally cost several hundred dollars just to find the problem! You will start with your Mode 6 OBDII scanner like you would a regular scan. Follow the instructions on the scanner, then one you are in the menu, go to either non continuous monitors or diagnostic monitors. From here, select test ID $53 (this ID is used for 1997-2006 E150 Vans). Once you are in, you will see the cylinder numbers, and the exact number of times the PCM detected a misfire on each cylinder. From here, you can proceed to swap ignition coil packs. This tool will pay for itself as you can use it on every 1996 an newer vehicle. Not all vehicles use Mode 6, but the 2002 Ford E vans started to use this function a lot sooner than most vehicles. See our guide on how to run a mode 6 diagnostic.
